MOVING
ARTS SCRIPT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
About
Moving Arts
Moving Arts is an award-winning theatre located in the Silver Lake district
of Los Angeles. We are a company of resident theatre artists
dedicated to producing new and original theatrical works. In our fourteen years
of operation, we have produced over a hundred plays by emerging and established
playwrights, the majority of them world premieres. Our productions have been
praised by the Los Angeles Times, Variety, Los Angeles Magazine, the L.A. Weekly,
Glue Magazine, the L.A. Reader, Drama-Logue, BackStage West, the L.A. View,
Park La Brea News, Glendale Leader, the Tolucan, the Burbank Times, Frontiers,
Compass, and various local radio stations.
The theatre is operated in full accordance with the Actors Equity Association
99-Seat Plan. We are also a proud member of LA Stage Alliance, Theatre Communications
Group, and Play 7. Literary Director Trey Nichols is a members of the Alliance
of Los Angeles Playwrights and the Dramatists Guild.
Types
of Material
For "mainstage productions" (Friday - Saturday @ 8pm, Sunday @ 2pm
with a minimum 6-week run) we are interested in original drama or comedy that
is bold, challenging, and edgy; engaging stories with complex characters, evocative
language, strong relationships and resonant themes that speak to the human condition
in a fresh and startling way. We are not limited to any particular style or
genre; we are confined only by the inherent truth of the material, though we
tend to prefer contemporary settings to historical ones. We are drawn to plays
that speak to a diverse, culturally literate audience.
We also produce a New Play Development Workshop and a Playreading Series. The
New Play Development Workshop involves an intensive rehearsal process of a new
play followed by a short run of a workshop production. The Playreading Series
is a free forum, open to the public, involving a brief rehearsal process and
a post-show audience discussion. There is no separate submission process for
the New Play Development Workshop or the Playreading Series--all plays are selected
from scripts solicited through our regular submission process indicated below.
For other programming, we favor the eclectic--some of our late-night or short-run
shows have combined elements of cabaret, folk singing, biting stand-up, radio
comedy and performance art.
Physical Description
Moving Arts' theatre is currently a 30-seat black box in the Silver Lake district
of Los Angeles (east of Hollywood, northwest of downtown); this venue is used
primarily for rehearsals, playreadings, and workshops. Mainstage productions
will be staged at venues throughout the greater Los Angeles area until a larger,
permanent theatre space is secured by the company.
Payment
Payment is a small non-refundable advance against a percentage of admissions.
In return, we seek a small percentage of future income from
subsequent productions of the play for a limited time.

Hmm...what
else...?
Oh! Moving Arts accepts submissions and queries for full-length plays year-round.
Although we make every effort to speed along the reading and evaluation process,
we are a small organization and want to give each script the full attention
and consideration it deserves. Sometimes this involves multiple reads, spirited
discussions, sleepless nights, fistfights, etc. Please allow six to nine months
for a query/sample response and an indefinite period for a script. Please refrain
from follow-up communication regarding your submission; if you've sent a SASP
or SASE, we will always send you a reply after your materials have been reviewed.
Please do not send scripts or sample pages via e-mail.
We look forward to reading your work!
